For the Benefit of Gary Ostrow.

Somehow I got in the crosshairs of Gary Ostrow, who laid off my friend Rumpy just long enough to flood my feed with comments like this over a post I did attaching the blockbuster affidavit filed against Alan Dershowitz:
NOTHING CEASES TO AMAZE! MORE DADE COVER-UP AND CRONYISM!!
A very popular South Florida Lawyers blog, with an audience that numbers in the hundreds of thousands, recently posted an article on the Prince Andrew/ sex slave story, more than implying that the allegations are absurd and moreover, that they have some nerve implicating Alan Dershowitz!
I can see the objective and detached blog moderators running interference for Dershowitz, but it forever STINKS of hypocrisy and double standard, when those ANONYMOUS writers blatantly ridicule the accusers and the story as a whole!
Then Gary followed it up a few days later with another post:
HERE IT IS: MORE ON NOTHING CEASES TO AMAZE/MORE DADE COVERUP AND CRONYISM: (SEE FEBRUARY 1 POST ON THIS STORY)
THE SOUTH FLORIDA LAWYERS BLOG POST ESSENTIALLY BRUSHING OFF OR TRYING TO SKIRT THE PERVERT PRINCE PEDOPHILE STORY AND THEIR SHAM DERSHOWITZ COVER-UP!
Huh?

To be clear -- I was not trying to be dismissive or "run interference" or "cover up" anything, or engage in "cronyism" or "brush off" or "skirt" anything.

Indeed, I linked to the filed affidavit so everyone can read and evaluate the alleged victim's sworn testimony.

Perhaps the word "insane" tripped Gary up, or my cheeky headline.

Remember -- I try to be entertaining and occasionally informative, or vice versa.

That means I have to try to write something that someone might find interesting as they click through two hundred websites in twenty minutes (basically porn and sports) while sitting in their office putting off boring interrogatories that they don't want to draft.

The case -- by any measure -- is insane.  And not just the stuff about Dershowitz.

That doesn't mean the allegations are not true, or that Dersh did not commit the crimes alleged.

But come on, this case is wild and getting wilder!

Welcome to Florida.

Finally, on Dersh -- I like anyone who shines a spotlight on hypocrisy, who makes the rich and powerful uncomfortable, exposes their foibles or even better -- holds them accountable, and who fights for justice on behalf of the other 99 percent.

For many years Alan fit into that category.

But then if you've ever tried to hire him for expert or consulting work, you may have noticed his fee grew significantly, and his causes and cases grew less precise or worthy of his formidable intellect.  That's just my personal opinion.

He also got a little too rigid on Israel for my taste and there are plenty of other things for someone to not like about the guy at this late stage of his career.

Again -- who cares?

But seriously my general opinion of Dersh has nothing to do with my post or the allegations of the alleged victim -- which was not intended to be a "cover up" or "cronyism" especially for someone as reprehensible as Epstein if you've ever read this crappy blog closely.

And FWIW I agree with Gary that Dersh's public statements have been all over the map and at times less than convincing (yet they could also be entirely true), and also that Jack Scarola is one hail of an adversary.

I doubt this is going away anytime soon.

But really -- who knows?

My Kind of Federal Judge!

Sure we have Scott Rothstein and his lovely Tom James clothier Romina Sifuentes, but Louisiana has ED LA judge G. Thomas Porteous Jr.:
A federal judge from Louisiana who had run up big gambling debts routinely solicited money and gifts from lawyers with cases before his court, Congressional investigators said Tuesday as the House opened impeachment hearings in the judge’s case. The judge, G. Thomas Porteous Jr. of Federal District Court, had more than $150,000 in credit card debt by 2000, mostly for cash advances spent in casinos, investigators said. Judge Porteous’s requests for cash became so frequent that one New Orleans lawyer said he started trying to dodge the judge.“He began to use excuses that he needed it for tuition, he needed it for living expenses,” the lawyer, Robert Creely, told a House Judiciary Committee task force. “I would avoid him until I couldn’t avoid him anymore.”
Mr. Creely said he and his law partner, Jacob Amato, gave Judge Porteous an estimated $20,000 o…

Honoring Richard C. Seavey

I drank a shit-ton of bourbon last night. Enough to float a battleship.

My head hurts. But not as much as my heart.

We lost another lawyer over the weekend. Not someone who will receive facebook accolades and other public claims of friendship and statements that he shaped and changed lives and careers. Just a guy who did the best he could with what he had. Every day. And he did very, very well to be the best person he could be.
Richard Seavey was a profoundly private person. In his 49 years, he walked through more than his share of trials and tribulations, mostly asking for no help, leaning on no one.

Richard was a fantastic lawyer. He could try a case. He could "litigate" a case. He could mediate and settle a case. He was nuanced. He bent but never broke. The blustery Miami lawyer never scared him. To the contrary, he found humor in it, studying it like a science project. Richard never got too high or too low. He was good at lawyering, but you got the f…
